Closest collaborator of St. Joseph Calasanz, novice master, and First Assistant General who dedicated his life to evangelical poverty, religious formation, and expanding Piarist education across Europe.
Pietro Casani was born on 8 September 1570 in Lucca, Italy, into a noble family. From childhood he excelled in the humanities, music, philosophy, and theology.
His deep spiritual life and love for learning prepared him for a life dedicated to God and the education of young people.
After the death of his mother, Pietro entered the Congregation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded by St. John Leonardi. He made his religious profession in 1597 and was ordained to the priesthood on 23 September 1600.
His wisdom, humility, and administrative abilities soon earned him positions of leadership within the congregation.
In 1617, Father Pietro left his previous congregation to join the newly established Order of the Pious Schools, inspired by the vision of St. Joseph Calasanz.
He became one of Calasanz's closest collaborators, first assistant, novice master, spiritual guide, and trusted adviser. His unwavering commitment to evangelical poverty and education helped shape the early identity of the Piarist Order.
Blessed Pietro dedicated his life to strengthening the young Piarist Order. He served as:
He formed generations of young Piarists, promoted fidelity to the Rule, and encouraged a spirit of simplicity, prayer, and service.
Despite declining health, Blessed Pietro remained faithful to his mission until the end of his life.
He died peacefully on 17 October 1647 in Rome with St. Joseph Calasanz at his bedside. His death was deeply mourned throughout the Piarist Order, and Calasanz immediately encouraged the beginning of his cause for sainthood.
