Superior of the Piarist Novitiate and parish priest at Peralta de la Sal, the birthplace of St. Joseph Calasanz. Courageous witness of Christ who gave his life for the faith during the religious persecution of 1936.
Blessed Dionysius (Dionisio) Pamplona Polo was born on 11 October 1868 in Calamocha, Teruel, Spain, into a deeply Christian family that nurtured his faith, love for prayer, and devotion to God from his earliest childhood.
He entered the Order of the Pious Schools (Piarist Fathers), where he embraced the charism of St. Joseph Calasanz with joy and dedication. Following his priestly ordination, he consecrated his life to the education of youth and the pastoral care of souls.
Blessed Dionysius devoted himself passionately to educating children in Spain and later served as a parish priest in Buenos Aires, Argentina, bringing Piarist education and pastoral care across continents.
In 1936, he served as the Superior of the Piarist Novitiate and parish priest at Peralta de la Sal, the historic birthplace of St. Joseph Calasanz, guiding novice candidates and caring for the local parish community with fatherly devotion.
During the severe religious persecution of 1936, armed militants confronted Fr. Dionysius and demanded the keys to the parish church. He courageously replied:
"I will never hand over these keys except to my bishop."
Arrested solely for his priestly identity and fidelity to the Church, he was publicly executed on 25 July 1936, remaining steadfast to Christ until his final breath.
On 1 October 1995, Pope St. John Paul II officially beatified Blessed Dionysius Pamplona Polo alongside his fellow Piarist martyrs of Spain, recognizing their supreme sacrifice of life for the faith.
Blessed Dionysius Pamplona Polo remains an inspiring testament to:
"I will never hand over these keys except to my bishop."
