Daughters of Mary, Educators of the Faith

Blessed María Baldillou Bullit and her companions were members of the Daughters of Mary (Escolapias) who faithfully dedicated their lives to Christian education and the formation of young people according to the spirit of St. Joseph Calasanz and St. Paula Montal.

During the religious persecution of the Spanish Civil War (1936), they refused to abandon their Catholic faith and remained steadfast in their religious vocation. Arrested because of their faith, they embraced martyrdom with courage, forgiveness, and complete trust in Christ.

On 11 March 2001, Pope St. John Paul II beatified them among the 233 Martyrs of Spain, recognizing their heroic witness to the Gospel.

These two sisters from Uruguay became the first Blessed of their country, freely choosing to remain united with the religious community and accepting martyrdom for their Catholic faith.

A Witness That Continues to Inspire

The witness of Blessed María Baldillou and her companions reminds the Church that Christian educators are called not only to teach the Gospel but also to live it with courage. Their fidelity to Christ, love for young people, and willingness to surrender their lives continue to inspire the Piarist and Calasanzian Family throughout the world.
